What is AEO, and how long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Short answer
AEO (answer engine optimization) means publishing clear answers on your own website, in a form that ChatGPT, Google's AI results, Perplexity and Claude can read and cite. Expect it to take months. Nobody can guarantee that an AI tool will quote you, and a firm promise of a date is a guess.

How AI tools choose what to quote
AI search tools read public web pages, much as search engines do, and then write a short answer with links to some of the pages they used. They have an easier time quoting a page that answers one specific question near the top and states the business name, location and facts in plain sentences.
What the work involves
We start from knowledge you have already approved inside your private record. Anything about a specific customer comes out. What is left gets written up as question-and-answer pages on your site, one question per page, with the direct answer first.
Each page carries structured data (schema.org markup such as FAQPage and LocalBusiness) so a machine can tell the question from the answer and knows who published it. The site also publishes a sitemap and an llms.txt file, a plain-text guide to the site for AI tools. We check that the AI crawlers you want are allowed in.
Some businesses go a step further and run an MCP server, a small service that AI assistants can call directly to look up your published answers.
Why it takes months
Crawlers revisit sites on their own schedule. AI tools also weigh how long a site has been publishing and whether other sites mention it. You can make the pages good on day one, but you can't make a crawler come back sooner.
How to tell whether it is working
Your server logs record visits from AI crawlers by name. Referrals from sites such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai show up in your traffic reports. You can ask the tools your customers' questions yourself and see who they cite. And you can ask callers how they found you.

- They overlap a lot. Pages that do well in ordinary search are often the ones AI tools read. AEO puts more weight on direct answers, structured data, and facts written so they can be quoted on their own.
